Principle Responsibilities & Position Purpose
The Human Resources & Training Manager will lead all HR functions during the pre-opening and operational phases of the hotel. This includes recruitment, onboarding, policy development, training, employee relations, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and brand standards. The role is critical in building a high-performing team and establishing a strong organizational culture from the ground up to support the successful launch and long-term success of the property.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Opening Phase
- Develop and implement the pre-opening HR critical path and ensure alignment with the hotel’s overall pre-opening plan.
- Lead manpower planning, recruitment, and selection of all team members in collaboration with department heads.
- Design and execute orientation and onboarding programs for all pre-opening hires.
- Develop the organizational structure, job descriptions, and grading structures for all departments.
- Establish HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook, ensuring compliance with local labor laws and brand standards.
- Oversee the setup of HR and payroll systems, employee files, and performance management tools.
- Coordinate pre-opening training plans, including brand induction, service culture, grooming, and operational skills training.
- Work closely with the General Manager and Finance Manager on staff budgeting, benefits, and compensation packages.
- Lead team engagement initiatives to foster a positive pre-opening culture and teamwork spirit.
- Manage relationships with government bodies and ensure compliance with statutory requirements (NSSF, SHA, PAYE, etc.).
Post-Opening / Operational Phase
- Manage all HR operations including recruitment, training, performance management, payroll, and employee relations.
- Develop and implement annual training and development plans to enhance skills, service quality, and leadership capabilities.
- Ensure consistent application of HR policies, disciplinary procedures, and grievance handling.
- Advise management on employee relations matters and support a fair and positive workplace culture.
- Lead performance appraisal processes and succession planning across departments.
- Monitor and analyze HR metrics such as turnover, absenteeism, and training effectiveness.
- Maintain effective communication channels between management and employees.
- Oversee compliance with health, safety, and workplace welfare regulations.
- Promote the company’s vision, mission, and values to ensure employee alignment and engagement.
- Support the General Manager and leadership team in all strategic HR initiatives and organizational development projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field (a Master’s degree or HR certification such as CHRP is an added advantage).
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive HR experience in the hospitality industry, with at least 3 years in a managerial position.
- Proven pre-opening hotel experience is mandatory.
- In-depth knowledge of Kenyan employment laws and HR best practices.
- Experience in setting up HR systems, policies, and training programs from scratch.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- High level of confidentiality, professionalism, and integrity.
- Proficiency in HR software and Microsoft Office applications.
